Clicking that is normal, and clicking that is not

Whatever the age of a kitchen out here, a healthy Wolf burner behaves the same way. Wolf says a surface burner catches in roughly three to four seconds. A short burst of clicks from a burner that is already alight is not a fault on its own, either: when the electrode senses a change in the flame it tries to relight it, and Wolf describes that as normal.

What is not normal is sparking that never stops, or clicking with every knob turned off. Wolf’s own first steps are modest: dry the top, seat the caps, and switch the range’s breaker off for thirty seconds before turning it back on. If the clicking comes back after that, it is time to call. Sparking that never lets up sends Wolf’s troubleshooting to the outlet behind the range, whose wiring and polarity have to be right, and after that to the spark module, switches and electrodes. Those checks are ours to make.

A hood that has to cover the whole range

When a kitchen is refitted with a wider range, the hood above it is sometimes left as it was. Wolf’s ventilation guide asks that a wall hood be at least as wide as the cooking surface beneath it, and that an island hood overhang the cooking surface by at least 3 inches on each side. A hood narrower than the range can let smoke and steam roll past its edges however hard the blower works, and no repair to the motor will change that. We measure both widths before suggesting any part, and tell you if the answer is a different hood rather than a repair.

The same guide sets how high a pro hood should hang: between 30 and 36 inches above the countertop. Mounted higher, Wolf says, performance may be compromised.
