Cooking through an outage

Wolf’s surface burners light from electric igniters, and Wolf says outright that those igniters will not spark or click without power. That does not leave the kitchen useless in a storm. Wolf’s use and care guidance allows the surface burners of a gas or dual-fuel range, a sealed-burner rangetop or a gas cooktop to be lit by hand with a long multi-purpose lighter, one burner at a time, following the steps in the guide for your model. A few burners cannot be lit this way, the wok burner on a sealed-burner rangetop among them, so check the guide first.

The oven, griddle, French top and charbroiler are different: Wolf says not to light those manually, because their output is higher. And with no electricity there is no automatic relighting, so a flame that blows out stays out. Stay with the pan, and never use the burners to warm the room.

After the power comes back

Once the lights return, a burner that clicks but will not catch is not automatically a failed part. Wolf lists a poor or insufficient gas supply among the reasons a burner refuses to light, alongside spillover, a cap sitting off its head and the spark parts themselves. Where a house runs on propane (LP), the tank is part of that supply, and Wolf’s notes on flame quality name a low tank outright. If every burner is weak or refuses at the same moment, the supply is the likelier story, and the first call is to your gas supplier rather than to us.

If one burner misbehaves while its neighbours light cleanly, the cause is more likely at that burner: moisture, a misplaced cap, or the electrode and switch behind it. That is the kind of fault we come out for.
