Heat Marks on the Counter Edge by the Cooktop

Short answer

Discolouring or damage along the counter edge beside a Wolf cooktop means heat is reaching the counter where the installation never meant it to: pans wider than the cooktop frame, a flush-set top without its expansion gap, or a counter unsuited to a flush install. Summit Cooking Appliance Service, (425) 272-6613, measures the top and its cutout; recutting or repairing the counter is a fabricator's job.

Summit Cooking Appliance Service

One visit reads the appliance and the installation around it. The $89 call-out pays for that reading and is deducted once you sign off the repair. Visits run 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days; phones picked up 24/7.

Reading the marks

A pale ring or a darkened edge appears on the counter just outside the cooktop frame. Where the marks sit tells you most. A patch beside one burner usually belongs to a pan: Wolf’s gas cooktop guide says pans should never extend past the frame, because heat gets trapped beneath the overhang.

How the cutout was made

Flush installs ask the most of a counter. For Wolf’s Contemporary gas cooktop, the opening is cut from Wolf’s template or published figures, not by tracing the cooktop, and it keeps an expansion gap all round. Flush induction and electric tops are meant for granite, solid surface or stone. Marks right round a cutout usually lead back to one of these.

Who fixes what

We measure the gap and cutout against the guide for your model and check the cooktop is heating normally. Recutting or refinishing the counter is your fabricator’s work; we pass on the figures.

Before you book

  1. Hold your widest pans over the burners they are used on. Wolf asks that no pan reach past the cooktop frame, because heat trapped under the overhang can cause damage.
  2. Note where the marks sit: beside one burner points to a pan, while marks right round the cutout point to how the top was set in.
  3. Photograph the marked edge, and note the counter material and whether the cooktop sits on the counter or flush with it.
  4. Stop there. Whatever sits behind the appliance's own panels, on its gas valves or live inside it is ours to test: call Summit Cooking Appliance Service on (425) 272-6613 and say what you found in the steps above.

Questions

Can I run a bead of sealant round the cooktop to keep crumbs out?

Not without knowing how it was fitted. Wolf says Transitional and Professional gas tops sit on a foam strip and are never sealed to the counter. Flush tops do take sealant, but only as Wolf's flush instructions lay it, in a joint left for expansion. Summit Cooking Appliance Service, (425) 272-6613, can tell you which you have.

Does a heat-marked counter mean the cooktop runs too hot?

Not by itself. Marks beside one burner usually trace back to an overhanging pan; marks all round the cutout point to the gap, the counter material or how the top was set in. We still check every burner or zone, so the cooktop is ruled in or out before a fabricator is called.
