New Duct, Louder Hood

Short answer

When a Wolf hood turns louder after a remodel or a re-roof and the blower was never touched, the likeliest change is the duct. Wolf's own noise checklist names an elbow straight off the transition, too many elbows, a smaller duct and duct that is not rigid. What changed with the kitchen

A blower does not grow stronger over a summer, so if the hood sounds harsher since the work, look at what was built around it. A remodel moves ceilings and beams; a re-roof can swap the cap. Each change may add a bend, a reducer, a short flexible connector to reach a new opening, or a cap that is stiffer to push open. Air forced through a tighter path is louder, and it is usually carrying less of the steam you wanted gone.

Blower or duct?

Wolf’s noise answer puts the installation first: elbows and transitions near the hood, too many of them, undersized or flexible duct, and in-line or remote blowers wired incorrectly. It also asks that the blower meet Wolf’s airflow requirement for the hood it serves. We look at the blower’s mounting and wheel as well, since a hood left open during building work can take in dust. What we measure goes to whoever reworks the duct.

Before you book

Ask the remodeler or roofer exactly what changed: the duct size, the route, how many bends, and the cap. Photos taken before the ceiling was closed are worth digging out.

Run the blower through each speed and describe the sound: a roar that climbs with speed, a whistle, a flutter or a metallic tap each point somewhere different.

Check every baffle filter is in place and seated; Wolf says the hood should not run without its filters.

Should the remodeler or a repair service fix a hood that got loud after the work?

Usually the remodeler, if the duct changed. Wolf's guidance sends duct layout to an HVAC professional, and rerouting a run means opening ceilings. A worn or loose blower is ours.
