Rattle Once the Blower Passes Speed Two

Short answer

A Wolf hood that stays quiet on its lower settings and starts to rattle as you turn it up is usually pointing at the blower wheel, a fixing that has worked loose on the housing or liner, or the damper flap at the duct transition. Why the noise waits for more speed

Turning the blower up raises both the wheel’s speed and the push of air on everything downstream. A crust of grease on a few blades, a housing screw that has backed out, or a damper flap that no longer swings freely can be silent low down and loud at the top.

Wolf’s pro hood and downdraft guides both warn that drywall spray and construction dust damage motor bearings and leave impellers noisy or unbalanced, so the first thing we ask about is any recent remodel nearby.

Where the installation comes in

Where an Issaquah Highlands or Talus kitchen hides a Wolf liner inside a surround the cabinetmaker built, Wolf wants the whole liner within that decorative hood, flush with it along the lower edge. A liner that sits proud of the woodwork, or touches it, can drum at speed. A duct narrowed below Wolf’s recommended size also costs performance, and owners tend to turn the blower up to make up for it, which is exactly where this noise lives.

What the visit covers

With the hood isolated at its breaker, we check the wheel for build-up and play, tighten the housing and liner fixings, and work the damper by hand before running the hood up again.

Before you book

Turn the blower down until the rattle stops and note where that happens: which button on a downdraft, or roughly how far round the knob on a pro hood, which has no fixed steps.

Check that every baffle filter is fully home and, where your hood has grease cups, that they went in before the filters. Wolf says the hood should never run with its filters out.

While the noise is going, press lightly on the hood shell or its surround. If the rattle changes or stops, a panel or fixing is involved, not the motor.

It does. Wolf's pro hoods and hood liners use one blower knob with infinite speed control, so 'speed two' just means the point on the dial where the noise begins.
