Bake Works, Broil Does Nothing

Short answer

If Bake heats and Broil gives nothing, the oven's power and most of its control are proven, and the fault sits with the broiler: on an electric Wolf, the element across the top of the cavity or whatever switches it; on an all-gas range, the ignition of the infrared broil burner. What the split tells you

Bake and Broil draw on the same supply and much of the same control, so an oven that bakes normally has power and, on a gas range, gas. What Broil adds is its own source of heat at the top of the cavity. When that stays cold, the question narrows to the source and to whatever turns it on.

On electric Wolf ovens, dual-fuel ranges and wall ovens alike, the broil element either conducts or has opened, and we measure it and the control output that feeds it. On an all-gas GR range the broiler is an infrared burner with its own ignition.

Settings that pass for a fault

Wolf’s dual-fuel broil has three levels, from BR1 at 350°F up to BR3 at 550°F, and a thin cut on BR1 can look as though nothing is happening. Broil is also one of the modes Wolf leaves out of Timed Cook and Delayed Start, so it is started by hand, never from a programmed stop time.

Before you book

Choose Broil at the top setting (BR3 on a dual-fuel range), close the door, and give it a few minutes without waiting for a chime; Wolf's guides say Broil is not preheated.

On an electric oven, watch the top of the cavity through the glass for a glow spreading along the element. Keep hands out of the oven while you look.

On a gas range whose oven indicator light is flashing, turn the knob off and back on once. Wolf says the flash means the flame was lost and the oven locked itself out.

Questions

Should the oven door be open when I broil on a Wolf?

No. Wolf's current use and care guides for its dual-fuel and gas ranges both say to broil with the door closed, using the two-piece broiler pan supplied with the range.
