Smoke or Smell on First Use After Install

Short answer

Some smoke and a hot, oily smell the first time a new Wolf oven heats are expected; Wolf's dual-fuel guide has each oven run at 500°F for an hour, ventilation on, to burn off manufacturing oil. A smell that returns after that, or smells of plastic, points to packing left inside. Summit Cooking Appliance Service, (425) 272-6613, checks the cavity and the installation on an $89 visit.

Summit Cooking Appliance Service

One visit reads the appliance and the installation around it. The $89 call-out pays for that reading and is deducted once you sign off the repair. Visits run 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days; phones picked up 24/7.

What the first heat is meant to do

A new Wolf oven carries a film of oil from manufacturing, and the first hot hour is meant to burn it off. Wolf’s dual-fuel range guide makes that a step before any cooking and says plainly that some smoke and odour are normal while it happens; popping as a new cavity heats and cools is normal too.

A hazy kitchen on day one is therefore not a fault. It becomes one when smoke comes back on later bakes, when the smell turns sharp or plastic rather than oily, or when it grows instead of fading. Gas is a different smell altogether. If you notice it, the oven waits: take the household outside first, and only then call the gas utility or 911.

What an installation can leave behind

The first place to look is anything that should have left with the installer. On the E Series wall oven, Wolf’s installation guide lists white protective material behind each rack guide mounting point among the packing to remove. An Issaquah remodel adds smells of its own, as fresh paint and stain give off odour when the oven warms the room. Wolf’s dual-fuel guide also rules out foil linings and oven cleaners, so residue from either is cleaned out before any part is suspected.

Before you book

  1. With the oven cold, take out the racks and guides and look for foam, tape, film or protective material behind the rack guide mounting points. Lift out anything that comes away by hand.
  2. Before the first real bake, follow your guide's first-use steps. On a dual-fuel range: wash the cavity with hot water and mild detergent, rinse, dry, hood on, Roast at 500°F for one hour, then cool shut.
  3. If the kitchen has just been painted or stained, keep the hood running or a window open while you cook until the finish has set.
  4. Stop there. Whatever sits behind the appliance's own panels, on its gas valves or live inside it is ours to test: call Summit Cooking Appliance Service on (425) 272-6613 and say what you found in the steps above.

Questions

It still smells after a week of cooking. What now?

Clear out any packing and wipe up spills, then follow Wolf's odour advice: run the oven empty at its highest setting for a couple of hours with the convection fan on, or run Clean on an electric oven. If the smell persists after that, call Summit Cooking Appliance Service, (425) 272-6613, and describe it.
