Gas Smell Near a Wolf Range: Leave First

Short answer

If you smell gas near the range, leave the house now and do not touch switches, the range or a phone on the way out. Once outside, call your gas utility or 911. Out first, questions later

A smell of gas in the kitchen is not a repair question yet. It could be the range, the connector behind it, another appliance or the supply into the house, and none of that can be judged safely from inside. Once the house has been cleared

When the utility or the fire service has said the house is safe, the range itself becomes our job: the burners, their valves and any one that ticked without lighting. The piping up to the connector stays with the utility or a gas fitter.

In a remodelled kitchen we also look at where the shut-off valve ended up. Wolf’s installation guide wants it near the range and reachable, and a valve closed in behind new cabinetry is one nobody can get to quickly.

Before you book

Get everyone out of the house. On the way, do not flip a switch, light anything, or touch the range, the hood or a phone; any of them could make a spark.

From outside, well away from the house, call your gas utility or 911 on a mobile. Puget Sound Energy, which supplies natural gas in King County, warns that a landline can spark.

On a propane tank, call the company that fills it. Wolf's use and care guide says that if you cannot reach your gas supplier, you call the fire department.

Why call the gas utility before calling Summit?

The smell was faint and went away. Do I still need to leave?

Treat it the same way. PSE adds its rotten-egg odour so that a leak can be noticed, and the smell fading does not tell you the gas has gone. Leave, call from outside, and let the utility decide. Wolf's own guide gives the same order: no switches, no phones indoors, call the supplier.
