Rangetop Knob Spins Without Catching

Short answer

A rangetop knob that turns round and round without working its burner has lost its grip on the valve stem behind it. Wolf's list of causes is short: the wrong knob for the model or position, a knob not pushed fully home, or a cracked knob, and beyond those a bent or broken stem. A sleeve on a stem

The knob turns and nothing happens: no click, no change in the flame. A Wolf knob is a sleeve that slips over the valve stem and pulls straight off again, so a spinning knob has lost its grip. On an unlit burner that is an inconvenience; on a lit one you cannot turn the burner down or off, which is why Wolf’s advice starts with borrowing another burner’s knob.

Where a remodel comes in

A rangetop in a remodelled Issaquah kitchen is set into cabinetry, and its knobs come off for cleaning, a change of finish, or while other trades work around it. Where there is a griddle, its knob is not a burner knob: it fits a pronged stem rather than the burner clip, and Wolf treats a little extra play in it as normal. Can I put a little lubricant on a knob that slips or feels stiff?

No. Wolf advises against lubricant on surface burner knobs on any of its appliances. A knob that is merely stiff can be turned on and off several times to work the valve's own grease in. What if the burner is lit and its knob just spins?

Wolf's advice is to fit one of the other burner knobs onto that stem and turn the burner off with it, then leave that burner unused until it is seen. If the flame still burns, or there is any smell of gas, get everyone outdoors first and phone the gas utility or 911 from there.
