Cold Air Falling From the Hood When Off

Short answer

Cold air sinking out of a Wolf hood that is switched off means outside air is finding its way down the duct, and the part meant to stop it is the backdraft damper. A hole to the outside, closed by a flap

It shows up with the first cold evenings: a chill over your hands at the range with the hood off, or a cooktop corner that never quite warms. By design a vented hood is an open path to the outdoors, and the only thing closing it is a light flap in the duct. The blower’s own airflow pushes that flap open; when the blower stops, it should close again and stay closed.

Why some days are worse

Two forces work against a tired damper. Wind across the cap can press the flap open from outside, which is the tapping Wolf describes. And a tightly built house running a bathroom fan or a dryer draws replacement air from wherever it can, and a duct with a loose flap is an easy way in. Wolf’s guide notes that cold-weather installations may need an additional damper. Placing it is duct work, and nobody should climb onto the roof to look.

Before you book

On a cold day with the blower off, hold a strip of tissue just below the front edge of the hood and see whether it is pushed downward.

Switch the blower on and off a few times and listen; you may hear the damper lift and drop back. If you hear nothing at all, mention it when you call.

Note whether the chill is worse on windy days, or while a bathroom fan or the clothes dryer is running, since both make the house pull air in through any opening.

Is cold air from the hood adding to our heating bill?

It can. Air falling out of the hood is outside air that your heating then has to warm, and it goes on happening whenever the blower is off, which is most of the day.
