Where the water comes from

A pot at a rolling boil puts a surprising amount of water into the air, and the hood’s job is to carry that vapour outside. Wherever the duct passes through a space colder than the kitchen, some of the vapour turns back into water on the inside of the metal. On a vertical run it can only go down, back to the hood.

Issaquah gives the problem a gradient. In the Highlands and up on Grand Ridge, where winter snow is more likely to lie on the roofs than it is in Olde Town, a duct climbing through an attic spends much of the winter as cold metal.

What the damper can and cannot do

Wolf builds a backdraft damper into the transition of its hoods, low-profile wall hoods aside, to keep outside air from falling down the duct while the blower rests. If that flap sticks open, the duct fills with cold air overnight and the morning’s cooking condenses on it. A working damper limits the cold; it does not warm a run through an attic. That warmth comes from insulation, which belongs to the HVAC contractor or roofer, and nobody needs to go up to look.

Before you book

Keep a short log for a week: the morning temperature, whether it rained overnight, and whether the drips came while cooking, just after, or with the hood off.

From the floor, without climbing on anything, look at where the water collects: the front lip of the hood, the filters, or the seam where the duct cover meets the ceiling.

After cooking, leave the blower running on low for several minutes before you switch it off, and see whether the next cold morning is drier.

It can, and the timing usually separates the two. Drips during heavy rain or wind, whether you cooked or not, point at the cap or its flashing, which is roofer's work.
